May 2009 marked the end of one of South Asia’s longest running and most brutal armed conflicts, between the Sri Lankan government and the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE). It was characterised by numerous atrocity crimes, particularly in the last phase when the Sri Lankan military launched an all-out offensive, in which tens of thousands of Tamil civilians were killed. Those final few months have become the subject of several United Nations reports and UN Human Rights Council resolutions. To date, no one has been held accountable for the crimes committed. It remains one of the darkest periods in the island’s history – to many, a genocide.
